Angkor Wat is more than a symbol, more than just the shape of a temple and its towers on the flag of the Kingdom. In fact, the site of Angkor-from the Sanskrit " Negara" meaning city or capital-includes about fifty monuments spread over 230km2. The monuments are different in styles and origins, and celebrate various cults. With time nature has taken over the temples, reducing some of them to ruins that specialists have been struggling to renovate since 1907-date of Thai retrocession to Cambodia of three provinces including Siem Reap. Remains of what is commonly referred to as the Angkorian civilization can be found in Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. But it is around Angkor that archaeologists concentrate their efforts because it acted almost continuously as capital city from the 9th century until its fall in 1413.
